WHAT DO WE DO AND HOW DO WE DO IT!
The EDUCLOWNS are trained in people's theatre techniques, communications and street theatre. Before devising a performance, the group first conducts a field study to identify the community needs and problems in target areas such as sexual health. This information is then used along with personal input from the group to write a 15 - 20 minute tailored script that will speak directly to the people. The clowns make a loud procession through the community enticing a crowd and forming an audience. To keep the audience's interest they then continue to perform songs written about the subject matter in the form of traditional folk music. This is accompanied by drumming or tambourine and folk dancing. Music and songs are an integral feature of the Edu clowns performances and have proved to be very effective in attracting audiences and providing entertainment. People, especially children, remember the message-based lyrics long after the play is over.
Once the Clowns feel that they have everyone's attention they launch into the play which consists of around 4 - 5 scenes. Each play starts with the actors clearly introducing their character to avoid any confusion. The action is accompanied by further singing and the script is full of jokes that will appeal to the target audience. Although the form appears simple, the content of the plays touch on very complex issues. At the end of each performance the actors do not offer a solution, instead they ask questions to the audience. The post performance period is of great significance to the working process. After the performance the actors enter the audience to discuss feedback on the issues raised and hand out leaflets.
The Edu Clowns work does not finish there, team members return to facilitate group discussions and offer care and support to members of the community through Blossom Trust. Self help groups have been formed as a result of such activity. Please look at 'projects' to learn about the current Edu Clown performances
