The EDU CLOWNS were formulated and popularised by Blossom's founder Rev. Benjamin Vima in 1986. Originally they were used for ministry but the group soon realised that they had the power to confront important social issues. Mercy T Annapoorni who previously trained as a clown herself recognised the potential of the concept and brought it with her when she became director of Blossom Trust. Since then the EDU CLOWNS have performed in countless communities entertaining and educating on a wide range of topics. In 2002 the clowns were invited to perform at a CAA (children affected by AIDs) Conference in New Delhi showing that other organisations were recognising the extent of their impact.

Over time the core group of clowns has changed, each new performer bringing with him or a her a new set of skills and ideas. However in recent years, due to lack of funding the EDU CLOWNS have faced problems regarding consistent training, rehearsal and organised performances. Consequently this has meant that up to 50 trained EDU CLOWNS are now spread across the state. These actors can be called upon and trusted to perform a successful and engaging programme when required, but unfortunetly there is not the funding to employ them full time.

This does not mean the end of the EDU CLOWNS!

A fresh group of committed community actors, with varying degrees of experience in the EDU CLOWN technique have formed over the past 2 years who are ready to experiment, create, express, educate and bring about change. Lead by two professional Edu Clowns, they are currently working for Blossom Trust in association with Target TB. The team are currently devising a performance tailored to the needs of the rural communities, aimed at both adults and children, to raise awareness of prevention methods and support
. The individual members are currently employed by Blossom trust but it is hoped that in the future the EDU CLOWNS can become a self sustainable Theatre Company
